I want to learn the basics of coin collecting (like about mint marks and what all the letters on coins mean). I would like to find something online that can help teach me the basics, because I want to learn a bit first before going off to buy books just to make sure it is my type of hobby. Anyone have any websites which break it down simply and make it easier to understand for a beginner? Also any youtube channels which go through the topic? Thanks.

Stay away from YouTube. I'm sure there are a couple of videos with accurate information, but very, very few. Most of what is accurate out there is uninteresting and what is interesting is inaccurate.

Reportedly the best book out there is "From Mine to Mint: American Coinage Operations and Technology 1833 To 1937" by Roger W. Burdette.

No YouTube! Especially anything to do with errors and what they are worth. Most of them are totally wrong!

Really, @paddyman98 you are going to post a numeric IP with no indicator of where it takes one? Thought better of you...

Now wait just a doggone minute, isn't jumping to conclusions and judging people based on the tiniest grammatical mistake the international sport of cointalk?
