Stop complaining and just contact the Chinese Embassy. They should be able to put you in touch with someone that will make you any coin you want. And as many of them and in any grade you specify. :smile
Complaining is better than accepting this mediocrity no? I want to be part of the solution best I can, not part of the problem.
It isn't that much of a deal but I have been picking up walking liberties for 5 dollars a pop. And I'm getting Franklins for like 4. As long as I can buy coins under melt I am fine. Those are basically junk silver but some of them are nice,
Yeah but I guess my overall point here is boy, ebay has a lot of crap. and it's very sad people buy it, and buy it for premiums... I love seeing ugly coins there getting overstated as the "Best thing ever since sliced bread" boy, do those give me a kick!
I'm finding as many good coins today as I've ever found. It has always been a little difficult to find good coins and I'm not really seeing it much different in 2009 than 2008, 1998, or 1988. In fact, it is much easier since ebay to find coins. Prior to 1995, you had to find coins at shows, auctions, and dealers. The internet made it a lot easier to find coins to finish your collection.
There really is only 1 solution, if you want to find nice stuff then you have to look where it is - not where it isn't. And exercise patience. Then forget about ebay and establish good working relationships with reputable dealers over a long period of time. Get used to it, that is the bread and butter of the hobby. And it's not just found on ebay, it is pervasive. And that is why education, knowledge and patience are the keys to this hobby. Without them you will find yourself buried in drek. There are certain truisms regarding numimsatics that one has to accept - - there is no free lunch (these 5 simple words encompass a plethora of other statements) - 80% of all raw coins are problem coins - 80% of all older coins have been dipped at least once - probably 90%, or more, of all the problem free coins out there are common date, common grade, mediocre material
I tried doing what you did and couldn't get the results you did. I guess Picasa3 and Photo Impressions 6 just aren't good enough.
Are you looking for nice coins or steals/deals? Most of the nice coins are, as mentioned in dealers hands - so look for some dealers to work with. Doug offered the best advice. As for steals/deals few are to be found on ebay, but just keep working - some are there. And yes 95% of what is on ebay is crap - that has been mentioned over and over, and it has certainly gotten worse in the last few years. My opinion only.
As a rule...the Steals/deals....are up for less than 3 minutes. Unless you are watching every new listing that comes up...as they come up...forget getting a real steal. Somebody will have beaten you to it. I bought a complete set of silver washington quarters including the keys for 260 dollars. The listing was up for 1 minute and 16 seconds. Here's the enlargement of the reverses of that Morgan lot. I can see which coin has a 2 letter mint mark. Nightowl
nightowl, if it is the coin with the orange dot, which I see what I think is two cc's then that is a good looking coin. Congrats, Wornslick
That's the one I think has a 2 letter mark. It may even have prooflike surfaces. It wasn't a real gamble though, since at 20 bucks a coin, it could have been any of those and I'd have been happy enough. Nightowl
You are not looking in the right places, BNB. Good coins are very, very rarely found on eBay or Teletrade. They are in the hands of collectors or in numismatic auctions (like Heritage or Stacks), and occasionally in dealer's cases (generally for a very short time). Good coins "go to sleep" (i.e. disappear) quickly, rarely to reappear on the market. Think of it like this. You're a collector with 10 coins. You are forced to sell half of them. Which half would you sell, the good half or the bad half? Get it?
Here's a fresh one. For advocates of your local coin shop...see if he'll make you this deal. They are common....sure....but there's 13.50 worth of silver per coin. Hey....This listing lasted 5 minutes. That may be a record. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300377403733&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT Nightowl
Mark Feld told me once its important to be patient. I feel this is really important, as its my downfall. I'm not patient, but we need to be patient to find really good coins because they do not come often. I agree with doug, establish a relationship with reputable dealers and see what they have. Sign up for mark felds NEWP list, look at CRO's selection often, look through heritage. I also think that the good coins stay in collections. The classic head I bought from mark I will never sell. it's one of my special coins. I have sold other gold coins of my collection recently but that one is special to me.
If ya'll think you can read MM's from that pic' of Morgan dollars, then you are drinking some weird type of kool-aid. Speedy
I noticed recently that Bing Cashback is limited to 40 transactions per account so I've knocked off my habit of Binging everything and saving them for PCGS Spouses in PR70.
Hey Speedy.....I'll take better picture of the CC when it gets here in a couple days. It doesn't really matter which of those coins is the CC at the price I paid...but I'd bet that's the one. Nightowl
Hey Speedy....They arrived this morning. Must have been a good batch of Koolaid. The coin I pointed to as likely being the CC mint, is this coin. It's clearly the highest grade coin of any in that lot. It doesn't have prooflike surfaces however. I didn't say I could "read" the mint mark, but that it looked as though it was a 2 letter mark....and there's only 1 mint mark comprised of 2 letters. Nightowl
Look outside of ebay. BNB-No need to mach my post amount, I spend more time looking for coins then posting on CT. I have found deals and steals from individual sellers who live in small towns where there are no coin dealers around....
