The U.S. Mint is also partially to blame for this phenomenon with minor errors. It started in 2009 with the Lincoln Cents. With over 100 listed doubled dies for just the reverse of the Formative Years cent, I have to believe they purposely avoided any kind of serious quality control that year by letting these get by just to grab headlines and lines of people trying to get hold of these by the rolls. Eventually the furor died down as did the prices when tens of thousands of the same errors were found. BUT, it was a lot of fun while it lasted. Although the market is slim for these now, some made a nice profit on their finds, as did I, to fund other parts of my collection. Free enterprise is alive and well. I also agree with green18 about having to use a high power loupe to find these. This was a loaded question though as I knew it would garner both positive and negative responses. But these minors are still a good learning tool in the attribution process, staging process, what is worth keeping and what is not. People like James Porter (On F.B. with his page Coin Seekers ) , spent years searching for and finally completing a full set of all known doubled dies for the reverse Formative Years Cent. He had a lot of fun doing this and now has a specialized collection that is worth his bragging about. Marilyn Keeny also contributed greatly to the 2009 cents attributions ( Her husband Rufus has a realty TV show about mushroom hunting ) as did David Egelund from Missouri. You will see their names all over John Wexler's listings for their discovery coins. Collecting minor errors, is no doubt, a niche group in the bigger scheme of this hobby.
