This probably won't help but its my experiance with coin storage.

It depends on location for sure. My problem was I did have a safe bolted to the floor in a closet with all my coins in it. Problem was is that a EF5 tornado (worst in the history of US) came through my town around 6pm on a Sunday night. Well that safe bolted to the floor did nothing to stop 200+ mile an hour winds. The safe (and the floor it was attached to) got sucked out of my closet through a window and landed in the middle of my back yard with a 80ft tree on it. Now I wish I could forever have that kind of security. I did have a safe deposit box at the bank but little good that did. The bank crumbled and all contents were deemed lost. Pretty sure the PMs I had inside were scooped up by a FEMA dozer and in some land fill by now.

The good news is that I was over protective of my coins and had placed many in plastic baggies after proper storage had been taken place. After 8 hours with a chainsaw I was able to get that tree off my safe. I couldn't believe the condition of the safe and how everything inside had not taken any damage. Before the tornado our house was broken into. Those little....... left the crow bar they used trying to free my safe and the four drawer filing cabinet that was bolted to the floor. So when it comes to theivery the safe and locking filing cabinet held tight but when it came to natural disasters the safe box at the bank failed miserably.

Now I keep my coins in a new safe bolted to the floor in a closet. It seems to work just fine with me. I picked one up from a local hardware store for around $400 bucks. Its got enough room for my more valuable pieces. I also have a new four drawer filing cabinet (that locks) for my less valuable stuff and dansco albums. It is also bolted to the floor and wedged in tight. As an added bonus I built a bookshelf to fit perfectly over the door so anyone who doesn't know better wouldn't even realize there was a closet located behind it. (Except for you fine folks now.) But never again and I mean never even 14 hours away from the tornado alley will I use a safe deposit box again. The bank doesn't give a hoot about the contents you have inside and will do nothing if they themselves are robbed or if a 1.5 mile wide tornado wipes them out.

The best advice I can give is do whatever makes you feel safe about your valueables. Some buy the home security systems others attach electrial outlets to light up the night. But I believe location is everything. You never know when you are sitting at home on a typical Sunday night watching tv and eating dinner when nature will decide to strike and take everything you thought you knew and thought was safe away from you. Crazy things have been happening all over the states lately from tornados, to hurricanes and even earthquakes. Its hard to ever feel safe or know your items are safe nowadays but all we can do is try our best.

Wow, is all I can say. That covers a lot of options and angles.

A few weeks ago my wife was so busy at her work and scatter brained that within a 5 day period she left the garage door up twice and one day left the front door completely open..all day while we were at work. Nothing happened at our house.

The sad part of it is that looters ran off with my golf clubs.

 

Wives...Can't live with em..Can't shoot em...JK I love my wife but she's been known to leave the keys to the cabinet in the same room. Luckily for both of us nothing has ever happened.

I made three large 10" PVC tubes 32" Long, I glued the cap on one end and on the other end I glued a female adapter so I could install a screw in cap which I used Teflon tape to ensure pvc pipe would remain air tite and waterproof. I put all Silver and gold in separate sealed containers mostly glass mason jars but did use some large pickle jars as well. I put two big bags of Moisture absorbent Desiccant in each PVC tube along with a capsule to keep corrosion down for all metals. Been in the ground for well better than a year. I recently opened them up to add what silver and gold I had purchased since burying them and they looked just like they did when I buried them. I feel putting them in secondary containers in PVC tubes helped a lot. I have three of them completely full and getting ready to build two more out of the pipe I have left, I have between 2,000 to 3,000 Oz's in the tubes and running out of room again? In my opinion this is the only way to go!!! Good luck my friend!!

Don't trust banks, They are run by Government so no more needs said there!! This is what I done and it has worked out PERFECT!!

Well, this certainly was a disappointing thread... from the title I was hoping for a couple of maps or at least an address or two...

Speaking of storage and Sentry type Fire-Chests, I've read that it's a good idea to open them periodically to avoid moisture build up which leads me to the question, does anyone use those silica gels packets to absorb moisture in their storage units? I've also read that you should use the orange and as the blue may contain chemicals that can be harmful to notes and coins etc...

 

I still have mine buried on an island in Canada . People are all over that dang island with dozers and drilling equipment . Even diving down the holes , but still haven't dug a hole close enough to find it .
