My experience... While I am a new member here, I have been a member, then moderator, then Advisor of ScubaBoard (another expensive hobby!) for over 5 years. There is a natural 'life cycle' to most users. While Scuba is probably more transient than collecting, often people dive for 2-3 years and then move to something else more consistent with their life status, I still see similar patterns in many the other social communities I am involved in. Lurker-- a consumer of information; non-contributor. Many ppl fall in this area and never evolve to the next step. Noob -- still a net consumer of information, but now feels confident enough to answer a few questions or at a minimum asks questions that stimulate other discussions. Its all new and exciting. Mainstream -- consumes some information, but often contributes much more than what they consume. Depending on the person's experience in the subject matter coming into the community, some users may move to this stage quite quickly. Veteran -- consumes little, is getting tired of seeing the same questions/topics/issues over and over and is selective about where they respond. At this point, depending on the Veteran's personality and interest level, he/she either leaves the board (or no longer posts at all, just reads) or they move into a 'sage like' position jumping in on topics that are ONLY interesting to them. This is an off-the-top-of-my-head analysis. Scubaboard has over 100,000 users (~40K are active) with over 3MM posts. The owner is a very approachable person and if the powers at be here (Peter, et. al.) are interested in what we do to keep people interested in the board, PM me. Craig edit: Wow I realized I first registered back in 2005, but had only returned a few months ago when my interest in collecting was rekindled. I have been collecting for over 40 years (since I was 10) and worked part time at a Coin Shop in Huntington Beach during the 70s..
