In fact, the first year's production of Kennedy half dollars was almost entirely hoarded by speculators and those seeking souvenirs of the martyred president. Combined with a great reduction in the silver content of the half dollar beginning in 1965, the result was an almost total removal from circulation of half dollar coins. Thus, this type is rarely seen in grades below Extremely Fine. Collecting Kennedy Half Dollars by date and mint is easy and relatively inexpensive. Only in the highest grades are these coins scarce, though a handful of dates stand out as being elusive even at the MS-65 level. Collectors will find much of interest in Kennedy half dollar die varieties, as both the proofs and currency strikes are rich in doubled and even tripled dies. Another popular Kennedy half dollar variety is the 1964 proof with extra lines in Kennedy's hair, known as the "Accented Hair" die variety. Several repunched mintmark varieties of the inaugural 1964 issue are also popular with mintmark variety enthusiasts. The most desirable Kennedy half dollar die varieties are catalogued in VarietyPlus, and this includes the majority of Cherrypicker listings. Specialists will enjoy the Wiles book, as it includes a much more extensive listing of minor varieties. The glare from the devices are covering what you want us to see. When taking images of doubled dies, you sometimes have to place the coin in 180 degree to show what you want us to see. That way the light falls across the coin showing the light and shadows across the device you want to show us. Remember light and shadows make better images. On this coin the light is at 9:00 and it creates the shadows to enhance the doubling rather than flooding the image.
Newbie to this forum but long time (part time) collector ... two questions about DDOs: True or false: any type or year of a coin could be a DDO, not just those that have been discovered to date? And, I presume the collector's value depends on the degree of the die offset? Thanks!
I would say true on both of these. I've looked at many years of coins and know what can happen during the hubbing process and take this into account when I search. Case in point: The 2004 cents had a DDR that affected the EPU on the reverse. Well I wondered, if this happens that year, why could it not happen on other years of Memorial zincolns. So I checked all years for these and found a previously unknown DDR. 2002D-1DR-001 http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=2002&die_id=2002d1dr001&die_state=mds
I have looked thru a few Kennedy Half Dollars in last 15 years...but when I look at your photos I don’t see a doubled die. Maybe you should try again with some new photos? Larry Nienaber After a second look...I do see some doubling on the E of WE and bottom left on the TR of trust. I do have to say me eyes are really stressed after looking at your photos. You need better photos!
