Hi everyone Been looking for the last few days to try to answer this question, and as of yet cannot seem to find the answer. Along with the above, are there rough years for when * and + "subgrades" were added? Thing is i have an older NGC holder and think the coin fully deserves a cameo but does not have one. The holder is type "NGC 4" not really 100% sure what years that covers either. Thanks in advance, Richard
Stars started at different times for different series: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-your-ngc-stars-and-a-little-history.308504/ Proof coins from 1936 to 1978 (graded between 63-69) became eligible in early 2002.
The timeframe for NGC 4 would not have included stars or plus grades. As for Cameo, you can see from Conder’s picture that they gave it on NGC 5, but I’m not certain if it was around before that generation.
Great thanks for that. sorry i cant seem to see what you are referring to in referencing Conders picture, is it in the link that you added?
You’re welcome! I’m referencing your link: https://www.ngccoin.com/boards/topic/117773-ngc-slab-varieties/ Under NGC 5 is a picture of an Ike that has the Cameo designation noted on the holder (which suggests NGC was noting Cameo at least during generation 5).
To the best of my knowledge the TPGs have always used the cameo designation when appropriate - since they opened their doors for business. The terms cameo and deep cameo have been around longer than the TPGs have.
