Your defense of their decision actually was evidence they sent him out to die. That along with public opinion is how things change and bad officials get removed from positions of power. Sitting back and saying well they know what's best is how draconian states occur.

When the OP picked up Roscoe and did not take him to the hospital but tried to play doctor and nurse is when Roscoe was sentenced to die.

Roscoe lived a happy healthy life until the government official sentenced him to die being removed.

Unless of course you believe the doctor that birthed you sentenced you to die as well

That assumes that there are professional animal rescuers nearby or they have the time & resources to save a wee bird like Roscoe. Probably not.

Actually I did train him to find and hunt crickets and worms before he was released the first time. In fact I delayed his first release for a week after I realized he needed that skill. He didn’t like it but instead insisted that I continue to feed him. I took a lot of videos and pix and the one on this showed our mutual exasperation with each other

Believe me I did NOT want to take him. I searched for nearly an hour looking for a nest or parents. He was in the middle of the road hopping around because the asphalt was burning his feet. And I called every Wildlife rehab group for 300 miles just trying to get an idea what to feed him. Got a recording every time. Finally got a response 10 days later. He would have been dead by then. 56A0F4E2-B787-4121-9AC5-D5EE7DBCEAFB.jpeg

As stated before I called every rehab facility within 300 miles. Nobody answered either the phone nor my voicemails. First response I got was 10 days later. So WHAT experts?

Also I have heard from a number of volunteers who told me that baby or injured birds that are taken to rehab facilities are used to feed hawks and eagles.

You did the right think Chip. Sometimes you have to go with your gut when all conventional wisdom fails. Man, they sure look nicer when they're adults!

It was an unfortuneate and really no win situation for Roscoe no doubt. Hopefully everyone reading this now knows what to do if they ever are put in this situation. First is if you can put the bird back in the nest, do it. Otherwise report the situation to the game and fish department and do what they tell you.

Everyone makes mistakes hopefully this one is a teaching moment of what the proper course of action is when encountering injured wildlife for everyone reading these comments.

Sorry about the thread highjack but this is an important topic

Actually Roscoe had won and was in a great situation it appears until "experts" decided to step in

Public option on if he did the right thing or not would very likely disagree. Despite what some may think, we live in a democracy where public opinion carries weight as does how they vote.

You could not be more wrong with respect to wildlife management and are ignorant about the implications of letting a popularity contest regulate how we manage wildlife populations.

Chip you did what your conscious told you and your efforts are commendable. Sounds like you did the best you could. I wouldn't lament losing Roscoe because you did give him a chance he otherwise would not have had.

One last post from me on this subject and I will drop it. If you really want to make a difference in urban and suburban wildlife management please consider a spaying/neutering program for feral cats in your community. There are thousands of birds just like Roscoe, killed EACH year by feral cats. Something to think about.

I'll just leave it here as well in that I don't have a problem with nature being nature, but yes it is a good idea to neuter your pets as their natural predators have largely been displaced or killed off in populated areas and they can quickly get out of control.

The law. The government. The best government is as little government as possible. Think about what our founders said. The man and his bird should of been left alone.
