When I was a kid probably 10 or 12 years old in the mid 1960's. My mother got me interested as she started with dimes, my brother saved cents, and I collected nickels. I don't know if this was a cub scout project or something she did on her own. One could find a lot of coins in pocket change but I remember waiting for the letter in the mail from Frank Zagola from Toledo Ohio ?? for coins that we sent for. Mom and Bro dropped out but I turned into a lifer.
My grandfather "said" he had a coin collection... On my 7th birthday (1977) He gave me a rather large jar (About 3 foot tall, 1.5 feet wide) 5/8ths full of cents... Unfortunately there was a small grocery store on the next block... I unloaded that jar to buy candy until it was empty... Even spent some of the found Morgans and peace dollars that I found in my parents bedroom... When found out, I had a really, really, really red bum!!!! (And i deserved it!!!!) Fortunately, my parents were able to get their silver back... And now I have it in my collection to remind me, and my parents, of what could have been... All of that being said... I really did not catch the bug until 3, 4, or 5 years ago... Somewhere in there... But, now, I'm getting in a lil' deeper.... Especially with the more knowledge I get along the way....
Sickness what sickness> Well unlike most of the psoters to this thread, I did not get into the coin collecting world until after the US Mint 50 state quarter program was started. That sparked my interest and while I have not really done a lot of collecting, I am always looking at this forum, reading and looking at any coins that I can get my hands on. My focus, due to a lack of funds, has and is the more modern issues. Later, G.E.
