Looking through the wheat pennies that I purchased last week, I came across a 1924-D which, is great alone. But, I noticed that the D was stamped over the bottom half of the 9. I can't find anything online about it! Has this been found/ documented before? If so, what is the estimated value on it?
It is hard to see the actual size and shape of the 'D'. Such a mint rpm would be widely known. My suspicion until better head on photo is a dropped letter or damage on a 1924 plain. This article explains the process. http://coinauctionshelp.com/droppedletters.html#.VBe9shbe5Gk
Coin is not in too great a condition to tell for certain, but it somewhat resembles a minor lamination error or possible die crack.
Now that is interesting. what do you make of this @non_cents Newly discovered error PMD or perhaps one of your latest feats of engineering?
Better pictures makes me think it is PMD. Looks like metal in the 9 was greatly displaced, which is not surprising considering the marks and heavy circulation wear visible.
