In the last few months I’ve been clearing out my LCS wheat cent supply whenever I go. Usually, they don’t have much, but their wheat cents are a goldmine. Looking through the bin, I started noticing things. First I saw a 1913-S, then a 1926-S, then a 1911-S. (I had just paid $16 for a lower grade 1911-S, dammit!) This time, after counting up their bin, they gave me a bag of about 800 coins. At 3¢ each, I paid $24.

Drove home, poured a few out, and began looking through. Not long after starting I noticed one wheat cent that was quite woodgrained on the reverse. Anticipating another teens or 20s wheat cent, I turned it over. 1909-S. “That’s a tough hole filled in for almost free”, I thought before flipping it again and seeing the VDB. I was in disbelief. I grab my loupe, the dot is halfway between the D and B. Pull up images, mintmark position #4 looks right.

Set it aside and kept looking through.
