    Changed my collecting from Bust Halves to half cents. That let me buy an 1797 Lettered Edge low head half cent in VF-25 condition. A fair trade to get a rarity-4 coin.

    My apologies, Tyler G is correct. The clear S type II proof is not made from silver. It is so well minted that it looks like a silver proof.

    Lets see - 1879 business strike shield nickel mintage about 25k. I also own 1793 wreath and 1799 large cents - both mintages in the lower 40k range. I used to own some proof shield nickels, but sold those off.

    It always strikes me odd that an artist would go through all the trouble to create such an intricate pair of dies...just to strike forty-eight (48) pieces. :scratch: I have to think the dies became damaged somehow...or otherwise unusable.

    Glad you didn't call for US coins only. :D I have a gold half sovereign that was minted for the country of Gibraltar. In Krause's World Book of Coins through Google it says only 300 proofs were minted. A 1997 beauty!! ;) I wanted to point out that these pics are the sellers, better than mine. :yes:
