My favorite is a 1887 British shilling. I don't even remember how I acquired it. But it has a professionally drilled hole with tapered edges for what I believe is a ribbon to make a necklace. It is crudely scratched with the initials JMW WMW on the obverse. I mean very crudely made, like it was done with a penknife in a hurry or by someone who wasn't very careful or experienced. I have looked at it many times and tried to imagine the history of this. I have it in a "lucky" spot where I can see it once in a while. It's worth in money is just a few grains of silver. But it's history or possible history has always touched me and made me wonder. The good hole was done with a lot of care, so I believe it was meant as a gift. Likely a girl as the hole seems to be for a ribbon and not a chain. The crudeness of the initials suggest a hurry. I can picture a young lady giving this to her mate as a departing momento. Borrowing his pocket knife to scratch their initials on it quickly. A last minute thing ? Why ? Where ? Going off to war ? On a wharf before boarding a ship ? How did it get to America ? Did a soldier bring it back ? Did someone come here from England for a new start ? Was it ill fated ? Were they ever reunited ? Did she ever get the coin back ? I really wish I knew. But I am convinced the story is a romantic one. I guess you can make of it whatever you wish. But I really like this piece of junk. And will keep it for as long as I can. It reminds me that there are people who have come before us who were just like us and with stories that may never have been told. It keeps me reminded that we are all basically the same. With similiar dreams and desires and how circumstance shapes and directs our lives. Call me silly, but truly, this coin is my very favorite and has been for many years. gary
