    What would cause the effect above abe's head, in the motto?

    kewl, misaligned die strike.
    did you notice how thin the rim was on the bottom, compared to the sides & top?

    yeah what does the reverse look like ?
    I would think similar to allow that much metal to build up.

    The reverse was struck normally. So it is just a misaligned die strike on the Obverse and it is not a dual misaligned die strike as the link provided shows.

    Keep looking at more cents especially the 1970"s and you will notice a lot of this type of issue.
