Crystallized coins can lose weight over time. (I have a tetradrachm from Alexandria that has lost about 50% of its weight in the process). I speculated that perhaps the deposits on my coin might have leached out as a result of the crystallization process, and not have come from the outside. Of course, that is just wild speculation.
