There are lots of knockoffs out there... everything from Cheerio facsimiles to centennial novelties to modern replicas sold as souvenirs at battle sites (the last I was at Gettysburg, even some gas stations were selling them). There are also contemporary counterfeits, but the point is that, as with anything else in this hobby, it is absolutely necessary to do your homework before making any assumptions.
