hehe I actualy have one of those restrikes Though mine is not graded... couldn't resist it when i saw it
That isn't a restrike, it is an unmarked copy. The original restrikes used the original dies, and the Baslow restrikes used fransfer dies made from the original dies. That Smithsonian piece is also not a restrike, it is also an unmarked copy, and since it was made after 1973, it is in violation of the HPA.
If that is the case, and I believe you, why would NGC even bother putting in one of their cases? I'm having difficulty researching a LOT of pieces that come up slabbed as being made by "Private Mint." Any leads? Z
I have no idea. To me a unmarked copy in violation of the HPA is synonymous with "fake". My only guess is that since the Smithsonian is associated with the Government they see it as OK. Guess the law doesn't apply to them. Not sure what you mean. Do you mean you have a lot of slabbed items that aren't coins?
I see "Private Mint" being used for a variety of strikes that are NOT "Smithsonian" but specifically call out others such as Daniel Carr and Grove Minting. The term seemed to be used for "clandestine" production, and not as a general term. I guess I need more edjumacation . . . . . Z
