Presumably this is a commemorative, or an issue of a namesake, inasmuch as the man who founded what became the Carolingian Empire was a figure of the 8th century, 500 years earlier.

[Just saw your followup post in which you mention that.] I wonder if Israel has issued any coins commemorating Moses, or Abraham or some such figure.

During the mid to late Medieval times, it was popular to strike coinage
that depicted Christ, Saints and other figures. For the most part, they
were honoring the featured person. This thread was started in the ancient
forum. I just showed a coin from a much latter period in time. While
some might consider my Charlemagne piece to be a commemorative,
it circulated as "spending money" at the time much like our circulating coinage of today, ie. Lincoln cent, Jefferson 5 cent piece, Washington 25 cent piece.
I have a few others that depict said figures but I'll save them for another thread.

Great coins everyone! IIRC, my oldest coin associated directly with a person is a boring old lifetime Alexander drachm.

Many great coins have been posted! Also interesting to see the different collecting styles (i.e. medieval, Greek, Roman, etc.) I guess @AncientJoe superb stater is probably the oldest one can get, but my wish list has gotten significant longer (as if it wasn't long enough!).
