In my lifetime, 1974 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent...shoot, I prolly spent several without even noticing. It took sometime before they was discovered, just like the famous 55.

If we ignore errors, then we have to consider whether the vending machine or the store clerk will accept it. Now the store clerk will probably accept Wheat cents, Memorial, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes (clad or silver) Washington Quarters (clad or silver) maybe Kennedy halves, and maybe any of the small size dollars. They are not likely to accept older obsolete designs. Vending machines will take any nickels from 1883 to date, clad dimes and quarters, maybe small size dollars. They will not take cents, shield nickels or silver.

With those restrictions in mind the most valuable coin that might get passed with a clerk would be a mint state 1932-D quarter. The most valuable coin a machine would accept would be a mint state 1926-S nickel.

I don't have a price guide with me but I would think that the 1922 cent in MS65 would be close to the top. Only one die pair & it started off damaged so it should be one of the rarest also.

Pocket change :goofer:. I took a look on Heritage, couldn't really even find anything close. That 1803 Proof has a huge mintage :D. What did they go for? I thought the '33 was the highest selling U.S coin.

    In the 1960's I found a 1932D QT, and a 1916D dime. Nothing much since. :)-O)

That 1794 pattern is worth well over 5 million in today's market. That 1803 sold a few years ago for over 5mill. Id say it would sell for a significant premium now ;)

You'll note I said if we ignore errors. If you include errors then the 1916 Double die nickel in MS-63, 18/7-D nickel in MS-63 both leave the 22 plain cent in the dust. But they would be vending machine while the 22 plain would be Cashier.

I actually received a 1922 Die 3 cent in change from a Hardees in my hometown a few years back. A VF-XF example that's floating around here somewhere. I should find that again.

It made the papers. It was certainly the best coin I ever found in change.
