Yes they are educational and very historic to me. These are the coins of my ancestors. I've learned a great deal about the history of Naples and Sicily and the kings that were in power. And these babies are not for resale, they will go to my kids when I check out.
Wow.. I bought 5 as well. But I had pre sold 4 and kept the 5th for free plus some profit on top of that. I figure worst case they dimes and dollar drop down to melt value and I still have two silver dimes and a silver dollar for free.
Speaking of past actions and whether or not one made a dumb mistake borders on the impossible. At the time the decision was made we used factors that were present at that time. However, now that we are smarter and the values of some things have appreciated we feel "dumb" for not deciding differently. Of course if the value has dropped we are patting ourselves on the back for the foresight we had. My examples are for things I wish I had thought through a little better. Just after high school an old guy offered to trade me his 'one owner' (for real) 1929 Model A Roadster, worth about $300, for an antique rifle I had that at the time was worth about $300. I declined. Today the rifle is worth about $1200, and the Mod-A about $12,000. Yes, I still have the rifle. it just sits there.. in the safe. In the dark. Also, early in my collecting, and after I had a full time job, I decided to purchase a new car. I had the cash for the car. A friend and I attended a coin show and a dealer offered me an 1895 Morgan in decent condition. It was the car or the coin. It was early in my collecting and I really needed a car.. I figured I'd find another 1895 dollar at a later date. I was right, I have found a few over the years. But now I have neither the coin or the car.
I'd say it would be NOT buying when silver was 5 dollars an oz, and selling when it was 50. Other than that, it would be not buying the best I could afford when I was new to the hobby.
