Very unfortunately to the point of sickness. If you can't use a published work in common speach, then we have really hanged ourselves. Email the publisher and ask for permission.

I don't write the laws Ruben, I just try to follow them.

Actually, after reviewing Pauls request, he would be well within fair use assumptions under the specific education exceptions written into the law. i can quote it if you want but i doubt you want that :)

In addition, the website is protected under the DMCA safe haven provision, which is the only good thing that the DMCA accomplished.

    Its not my call though.

You don't need to quote it, I am very familiar with it. Anybody that wants to can read it here - http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

    A
    nd here - http://www.copyright.com/content/cc3/en/toolbar/education/resources/copyright_basics.html#fairuse

And no, scanning and then posting 48 pages of a book would most definitely not be within the fair use clause. Fair use allows you to copy a few sentences, maybe, stress maybe, a couple of short paragraphs at most. Usually, even posting a single picture from a book or a magazine is considered to be outside and beyond the fair use clause.

And you have to remember, this is not a non-profit or an educational web site.

Number ONE - That website is a FRAUD and not backed up by the law. It was created by the Record Companies and it LIES completely.

Now - lets see the real law in section 107

    http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107

The website you quoted can do some terse perversion to itself and stuff its nonsense to anatomical locations that can not be mentioned on a 1950's sitcom

Now - as for the actual fiduciary responsibly of cointalk with regard to policing copyright, it only has a responsibility upon a legal complaint under the DMCA

    To quote the law
    http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/512

It then goes on to explain what a take down notice actually looks like.

So, as a fact, the website has no obligation WHATSOEVER to police any copyrighted material accept to have a specific person to receive and act on take down notices that are filed under the DMCA.

I'd be happy to volunteer for that position if there is noone.

All that being said, Paul isn't suggesting copying 47 pages, but 47 images as I understand it... but maybe I don't understand it correctly.

Now, that is the actually law. Anything further would be politics and would need to move to the Politics section :)

The area of the appendix that concerns this topic is the first nine pages. It seems to be a moot point since I can't get my scanner to work for some strange reason.

9 pages is a bit of material. To defend a take down notice you would need a good justification, although successful defense of take down notices are nearly unheard of.

I go by the smell test in these cases; copying that amount of information from a book and putting it on a website smells bad, so you don't do it.

Yeah that is right. They also have a different feel to them. Mercs are fameous examples. They look almost like a screen across the field.

Oval man: Thank you for sharing your point of view. I am getting there to understand the different between contact marks and hairlines.

Tom B: Thanks, I will check out at eBay, amazon and bookfinder. I hope to find a copy.

Doug, mrbrklyn, Lehigh96 and Tom B: I know the copyright can be diciate situation. I don't want anyone to risk anything. I will find the book and study it. :)

Doug: A question regarding to prime and secondary focal images. Suppose I have those books, then I take few shot from my own coins and draw the prime and secondary areas using my photoshop. Will it be ok for me to post in this forum to share information on it?

If you create the images yourself of course it would be OK.

Awesome, it will be my new project. Of course, I will need those books in my hand before I can start drawing the prime and secondary focal. :)

Very informative and precise. GDJMSP and Kirkuleez explain this issue and answer this question early on in the topic in post #2 and #4. Thanks!
