The old green label with 10 digit cert. numbers seem to bring a good price but many won't even look at them. I call it a thin market. Ebay may be the best place for these with a low value but I don't really care to start selling on Ebay again. Next would be to crack them and send to PCGS or NGC and off to auction. Not a good option for low value stuff. I'm thinking coins with a higher value will do better in better holders. What are you seeing with these older green holders?
In your situation, Larry, I'd consign the low value stuff to a local auction. No eBay headaches, no returns and no shipping costs to deal with. I'd crack higher value stuff that seems to make sense, and send to PCGS or NGC by way of Great Collections.
I look at that as really a 2-part question. I have some of those in my collection (& especially the doilies!), & while I did not by them for the holder, I ultimately like the look & neither broke them out nor re-holdered them. So, for me, the actual esthetics come into play, regardless of the coin. The 2nd part of course is the coin value itself, & I think @ToughCOINS hit the nail on the head with his advice. I should note that (up to now) I have not been interested in, or concerned about resale; I understand how that may come into play.
After a lot of study, I really like Great Collections. They can make things really easy for me. I like that they are really close to PCGS. They will also send what they feel is worthy to CAC if that is still an option. With all the changes going on with CAC, that may not be an option for very long. I may have to ship the lower value stuff to someone. Not any auctions in my area.
Do you have any local brick & mortar dealers you trust who would take the lower value stuff on consignment, a bit at a time?
