What would create toning like this?

    My first thought was this coin was stored in an old paper envelope like you describe. If the envelope got wet, it could produce toning like seen on the reverse. Getting it wet, or leaving it in a very humid environment, would also help leach the sulfur out of the paper.

    Either way, that reverse is quite unattractive. I'm not a fan.
