So I dropped off my first (direct) grading submission with PCGS at FUN, and thought it might be a good discussion to guess what PCGS will do with these coins. Hopefully, this is the first installment in a series. Please guess the grade the following coin will receive (or the reason it won't grade): Coin #1: 1818 large cent Background: I purchased this coin from Tom Reynolds in April of 2006 off his website after receiving the coin on approval. Tom EAC graded the coin 45+/45. I graded it $400 and bought it at that price. What will PCGS say?
Alright Duke, I gotta ask for an explanation on this one. You're monitor must see more detail than mine!
It's late, I'm tired and I"ve been drinking On a serious note I love large cents and give them all a bump cause I like them!
So the little bit of flatness above the hair knot knocks this coin down to 45? wow. I don't know large cents, but I can't see why that coin isn't all of an AU grade. pretty pretty coin.. glad I'm not bored with Lincolns.
there is actual wear on the coin. From the forehead to the neck and on the leaves around the back. AU is when the luster is impaired, but when you see actual wear, AU is out of reach.
Just about all the flatness I am seeing looks to me to be weak strike. There are a couple points of light rub, so it might go 58 and then again it might go 62
If it's weak strike then why is the color starkly different where the luster is impaired? That's wear, not weak strike. And that AU-55 is a FAR better coin. It's a good comparison coin.
