When I was in second grade (around 1980) I found a 1956-d wheat cent in a jar of pennies. I've been hooked ever since.

This doesn't seem to have anything to do with this thread. Did I miss something?

My great uncle gave me a velvet bag of about 200 foriegn coins for Christmas in 1966, I was 10 years old. I've been hooked off and on ever since. And I always seem to gravitate toward foriegn coins. The coins are still in the family, I gave them to my grand kids and they all still have them though none of them caught the bug.

As a wee lil lad I think my mom talking about the 1909 vdb cents caught my attention the most, even though we had started off by filling as many holes in the cent album as possible.

my first "coin" was a box of Indian cents that my grandmother had from great grandpa that were taken from circulation or from banks at the time. a few flying eagles and all the early Indians mostly in AU condition. I was 10 or 11 at the time and was hooked after that.

An 1886 Morgan did it for me...
30 years later, I still have it.

Back in 1968 I went to a bank with my mom (back when they were open 'banker's hours - 9am - 3pm Mon-Fri.) and at the window I spotted a 1918 D cent in the teller's coin tray on the counter. It happened to be the end coin and the date was showing. Of course I asked for it specially and the teller gave it to me, trading for a lincoln cent I had. This was in the days when that type of tray was set on the counter and not hidden in a drawer.

Similar to this, but not exact. It was one that you could see the coins on the end and see the edges of all.

My back story is unique in that not coins, but an inherited stack of empty Whitman albums that got me into the hobby. There were slim pickings left for the 2nd youngest grandchild produced from 7 sons and daughters. I made it a mission to fill them all before I die.

Those are still right out in the open in my neck of the woods. That's how I found that Ike dollar struck through edge reeding. :)

  12. My very first coin was an 1874 Queen Victoria Shilling which I found under the floorboards of my bedroom in a very old house in the English Midlands where my parents lived. It happened in 1969 when I was eleven years old, and the magical memory will stay with me for ever. This happening was to lead to my lifelong interest in the collecting and studying of coins from all over the World. Over the years I've amassed quite a collection, but my Victorian will always take pride of place in my collection.

I was 7 years old and my father gave me an 1812 Bust
Half Dollar. I still have her @ 60 ! I also received a few other items. A Civil War token, some Indian head cents,Liberty nickels, and a few more odds and ends.
All are still in the collection . But the 1812 was always my center piece . Because in 1961 she was my oldest coin at 149 years young.

My son got me into coin collecting a couple years ago. The shiny bullion grabbed my attention first. So, my first coin in the collection was a 2013-S Silver Eagle. My interests have vastly broadened since that first ASE. Right now the dining room table is full of coins and everything related to coins. I have been on a 3 week binge of collecting, buying, cataloging, and researching coins. I wake up thinking coins and go to bed seeing coins. I need help!!

Yep, in 1957 and even into the early 60's, you could go into almost any bank and get Morgan and Peace dollars at face value.
