My parents always took a winter month long vacation, just the two of them without us kids! My father owned his very large construction company so winter months was his only partial so called free time. Anyway it was the winter of 1962 when my folks were leaving for their trip. The folks asked all us kids what we would like in the form of a surprise gift from them upon their return? A gift we’d receive on condition our Grandma had good reports to give them concerning our behavior while they were gone, Lol
So after hearing that my folks were going to Las Vegas, this little 6 year old boy in me asked my Dad to bring back one of those “Big Ole Round Shiny Heavy Dollars”
Upon their return I was given a very bright and shiny 1922 Peace Dollar And as a special treat I was also given (3) different $1.00 Gaming Tokens, The Dunes Hotel, The Castaways and the Golden Nugget Casinos. Needless to say I was “Hooked” for life thanks to my parents, into a world of Coin Collecting and interest! And yes, I still have all (4) original pieces!!!!

A 1922-S Peace dollar my mother found in circulation. I mounted it on a bezel and wear it on a chain necklace.

There was no one single first coin for me. I didn’t collect nor even have an interest before 2019. I’ve always known about my grandparents silver collection, 100+ Canadian half dollars, 4.5 rolls of Canadian dimes, approximately 2+ rolls of Canadian quarters, one Mercury, 5 Franklin halves, 8 Walking Liberty’s, one Morgan, one Peace and two Canadian dollar coins, one of which has a hole drilled through it. When I was a kid I’m certain I snuck some of the half dollars to go to the store... kicking myself now!
