Agree, I don't think what it looks like, the first that catapulted us into this fantastic hobby will always have a special place in our lives.
I thought I'd post the type of the original coin referenced in post #1. (Not my coin) Reverse: MARTEM PROPVGNATOREM, Mars advancing right. I sold my first collection to fund my college tuition, so sadly my first purchase is no longer in my possession. The antoninianus with this reverse type isn't in wildwinds. The portrait looks virtually identical to my old coin so it may be from the same obverse die. This coin sold for 150 euros.
My first ancient coin, purchased from Henri Delger of Old Roman Coins in 2003. Vespasian AR Denarius, 3.40g Rome Mint, 75 AD RIC 772 (C3), BMC 161, RSC 366 Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r. Rev: PON MAX TR P COS VI; Pax, bare to the waist, seated l., holding branch extended in r. hand, l. hand on lap Acquired from Old Roman Coins, March 2003.
My first ancient coin was a gift from an aunt in 1976(ish). A Theodosius bronze, thus my forum name. The first ancient I ever bought myself is this Histiaia Tetrobol in 1984: Euboia, Histiaia AR Tetrobol, 267-168 BC, 14mm, 2.1g, 1h Obverse: Wreathed head of nymph Histiaia. Reverse: Histiaia seated on galley. AIEΩN to left. John
