If I had to stretch I would say the Franklin but the truth is it was the Walking Liberty. The Mercury Dime, SLQ and Buffalo Nickel ended the GREAT era.
Did I read that correctly, someone actually feels that the Eisenhower "Ike" dollar was the last great american coin struck? Ummmm.... sure, ok I feel you, Im down with that. But since we talking crazy im going to toss the LOVELY, AWE INSPIRING "SBA" Dollar into the discussion...... but in all seriousness though, I hope whoever said that the Ike dollar was the last great strike was either joking or blind. I don't understand how/why the SBA dollar was allowed to even be put into use. What were the people in charge of making the decisions about such things not thinking when they decided to turn our coinage into turds. 21 HR Peace Dollar. A true GREAT coin...
I have to say the Buffalo Nickel .....it's true Americana showing respect to the heritage of this nation.
As I said before the walking half standing quarter peace dollar Mercury dime and buffalo nickel and ihc the last decent designs. The last great for silver was the trade dollar the last great for gold was the st gaudens for copper the draped bust large cent! Post 64 coinage to me has no redeeming features you can't even scrap it
Augstus St. Gaudens Twenty Dollar Gold piece......hands down the winner and not to'wade' through 4 pages of text.......
The SLQ and Mercury dimes aren't bad options either. Since the question asked for the "last," there is a temporal element incorporated and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was continued through 1947.
This is tough and i'm sure that has already been said. The Ike Should have been a great coin, don't get me wrong I love the Ikes but is not silver and that takes away the "great". so last great has to be the Morgan dollar because the Peace Dollar was just lacking something even though it was silver.
Personally I wish this design stuck around more then a year and a half as I'm a big fan! One of the all time best coin designs I feel
I at first wanted to say the Ikes, since they are an interesting series to me. But the 1996 w dime, matte 94 and 97 nickel, Kennedy matte, 2000 d millennium sac dollar, 2014 sac, some modern commems, the 5 oz silver disc things, etc are wonderful too. But overall, I think silver ages better, and a series with this metal an decent design would be the franklins. Sure, I love lady liberty designs better but I wouldn't turn my eye away from a Bu franklin or cameo proof.
I think itd lose a lot of its appeal struck on modern presses. I've seen silver rounds that copied the 94 flowing hair and they really didn't appeal to me. I just wish I could afford a 1794 dollar to go with this one!
