just having a search through my collection when i came across this gem ( ) and all i can say is "what was i thinking when i bought this?" i know what you're thinking "that doesnt look too bad for a 2000 year old roman coin" but thats the thing its not a roman coin its just in such ruff shape it looks like one. its actually a george 3rd gaming token (or a contempory fake guinea, i realy cant tell) dated 1788. i would like to see if any one else has any "what was i thinking?" coins and if you have please post them here.
It doesn't appear to be a Conder token so it is probably as you suggested a gaming token, or possibly and evasion piece. I can't make out enough of the legend to do a search among the evasives.
My 'what was I thnking" item is much worse. When I first started collecting, I bought 10 "gold" plated wheat cents on ebay. Now that is a definite "What the heck was I thinking" moment.
