In 1988 I paid $1000 for a 1917 D type II quarter I then send it to PCGS and it came back MS65. IMO...The coin should have graded 65 FH.

If I had a $1000.00 I'd go for a high grade full head standing liberty quarter. Or an 1881-S or 1882-S Morgan in MS 67.
Does the 1-ounce gold Krugerrand bought in the 70's for less than $1000, but now worth more than $1000 count?
When I was trying to build a complete set of red proof two centers in the 1980's, my first $1000+ coin was an 1869. I had nearly all of the coins, but bailed on completing that set after losing the Small Motto in a Superior auction in the late 80's . . . that coin was a PR64RD, and sold super cheap by today's standards (about $11K, I think), but it went beyond my threshold of pain, and I now regret like crazy having given up in that auction.
Found in a box of leftover coins in my shed on a second look at some odds and ends set aside as of no great value. Bulgaria 1 Lev 1916. Sold for $1000 to a Bulgarian bank for its collection. It is easy not to be thorough enough checking what you have, this came to light several years after I have bought a small box of mixed coins and I thought sold the worthwhile ones. It sold for at least ten times what I'd paid for the lot and I would have made an overall profit on what I'd paid just selling whatever it was that I bought the lot for.
... must have been a high grade CC PL Morgan dollar, right? ;-) My first $1000+ coin... I bought an 1805 draped bust half like 1-2 yrs ago and I am not gonna sell it soon!
I don't break the $1000 threshold often, but every single time it has been a seated Liberty quarter with the exception of the $.20 I am working on now. My highest value coin is a Copper Seated Pattern Quarter from 1870. Waiting on her to come back from PCGS now with a new slab!
