He was only looking to get like 10-20 (I think). I bought one the other day for $5 on eBay and it was FSB error free.
wow seems like the merc's would turn out to be expensive i will see i know what you mean about flying eagles not being a challenge at all. Thanks for all the input i may just buy a few of the later date merc with FSB just to satisfy my craving for merc's and go for the twenty cents or the 3 cents. Thanks everyone and any more opinions are welcomed. Also, why wouldnt any merc be slabbed? just curious as to why that is. thinking about it i havent seen any though. and for FSB how many bands are there 3 on top 2 in the middle and 2 on bottom?
The mercs wouldn't be slabbed by a top tier(PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG (AVOID EVERYTHING ELSE!!)) grading service because of the cost. It costs a decent amount to get it graded which means you pay more to get it graded then what the coin is actually worth. And yes there are 3 top 2 middle 2 bottom and if there is a clear separation between each band then its FSB.
:goofer:k thanks for the info thats what i thought the number of bands was i was just checking. Thanks agian for the info. Seems like there really is no cut and dry answer on the best way to go:goofer:
Type coins What about common date slabbed high grade type coins instead of a complete set of coins, you could stay in your budget and pick and choose nice one of a kind examples and not get caught up in a complete set of anything.
I was suggesting going with Merc's date/mm set. It sounds like your in no hurry and it's a great set. Start with the easy ones and you can get 64 to 66's FB at around $30 graded by PCGS and NGC. Yea a 45D or 45P in FB is crazy but just get it in high grade without the FB then. They won't cost you alot each until you get to the 30's but then your over a dozen coins in and can start saving up like you said. But yes there is no right answer to this it's up to you.
Sam, I cannot tell you how awesome this is. Seriously...what kind of coins do you like? I'm sure you collect modern coins, right? Do you search rolls for them, or pocket change?
Stick with the classics. I say start a collection of Indian Head Cents, Mercury Dimes, or Buffalo Nickels all in circulated grades. VG-VF. You can collect the buffalo nics and the Mercs for a few hundred bucks minus the key dates. You could jump start your Merc collection for less than $100 with this partial set on EBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/COLLECTION-LOT-...em&pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5193b017c1
Thanks everyone for all the help. Still not sure what i am going to do but i have plenty of time to think. i may just have to wait till i get a chance to go to the dealer and see which type "calls" to me when i see it
