Agreed sir. I am not usually a patient person, but coin collecting taught me to be. First it was because I lived in a sparsely settled state and collected XF/AU SL halves. Not many of those show up each month at the coin show. Then my patience has been sorely tried in ancients, where you can go 5 years before even seeing a certain "scarce" coin for sale.

Personally I think its a great aspect of the hobby. I believe being forced to learn patience, though painful, is a valuable lesson. I know old men always say this, but it does make the acquisition that much sweeter when it happens. The whole point of coin collecting is not the final completed "set", its the pursuit.

This is the worst impulsive buy I have ever made. It was purchased at night, after I had taken my ambien. God knows. katiejohnson.jpg

Heck I was about sixty when I completed my first set of them. Should note that since then I've built two more sets of them and sold two sets also One raw XF/AU set and the other MS slabbed just keeping the slabbed Everyman set now..

As for when to sell any time is good. Selling teaches you how to become a better buyer. When you sell for less than you bought then for, you learn what to look for the next time around the block.

Thats about the age I was when my Grandmother gave me a half complete set of Peace dollars. The fact that it took me the next 23 years to complete it didn't discourage me. Of course, it wasn't a priority to complete, but it was a goal. Someday you'll complete it with no problem.

I started out impatient now Im a little bit patient but not as much as I would want to be. Thanks for pointing this out because I really need people to say this all the time to me to "fix" my problem :smile

Try collecting ancients, that will fix your problem. :) I waited 2 years searching evey auction catalog, show floor, and internet sites to find a coin listed as just "scarce". At least US collectors can usually buy something its just a matter of money, ancient and world collectors sometimes wait decades for the ability to buy regardless of money. A friend just found a coin he was searching for since the early 90's.

There is more than one way to collect coins. Not everyone sees the need to make complete sets.
