It is all in what you collect. I still buy inexpensive stuff on fleaBay, but I haven't bought any significant purchases over $100 in quite sometime.
I've used Paypal ever since it first appeared and use it for every purchase on ebay, various websites and with individuals. I don't really care who owns paypal, all I know is I have used it for many years without incident. IMO, it is as safe or safer as anything available for financial transactions over the internet. If an ebay seller doesn't accept paypal, I simply move on. I never have and never will pay attention to sellers complaining about auction listing fees on ebay or any other site. It's a simple financial structure and any increases are simply passed on in clear view. In most cases the fees are paid for by the buyers anyway through the rediculously inflated shipping and "handling" charges we have seen in the past and which are even more rampant on ebay today. Experienced buyers know this and even though they may not like it, have accepted the fact for years as a standard practice on internet auctions.
I couldn't agree more. They are free to do this and if people don't like it they don't have to shop there. I'm sort of an impatient person. Since 2000, I've never paid for something on ebay by check. Because most of the time the seller wants to wait 10 days to make sure the check clears. I'm not willingly waiting 10 days for anything. As for a money order, now you're also waiting and anybody can cash it. The 3% fee is worth the convenience and security IMO. As a seller or buyer.
If an ebay seller doesn't accept paypal, I don't bid. Been ripped off once using a money order by a seller and ebay could do nothing. However using my credit card on paypal I have never been ripped off.
Same here. Conversely, as a seller, I require bidders to have a PayPal account or they can't bid. Gives me protection and convenience both ways.
Paypal Needs some seller protection Paypal is fine and dandy for ebay buyers but it sucks for sellers. Here is an example of what happened for me. I had a low value package (under $20) that I sent to a customer who choose not to purhcase insurance (I automatically purchase insurance if greater than $50). I did purchase delivery confirmation. The package arrived and customer said it was empty but wouldnt provide photos of the packaging. I had receipts of the weight, the delivery conformation etc. He opened a paypal claim, stated four words in his statement, "the package was empty," and received his money back in a day. Paypal stated he needed to send the coins back to me!!!!! That was there way of handling the situation, but of course the guy says he didnt recieve the coins. Point is this. Paypal is great for buyers but offers little to NO protection for sellers.
I understand your point - AFTER PAYMENT HAS BEEN RECEIVED. However, PayPAl offers a lot of seller protection on the payment side. How many PayPal payments have bounced? Have turned out to be fakes? Have been lost in the mail?
I think the next time I sell on Ebay, I'll include a note the says "while neither Ebay or I encourage the use of cash, I will give you a 5% discount if you make a mistake and send it. Rather than going through the expense of returning it to you via money order". I'm interested in seeing how long Ebay takes to pull my listing. What they are doing is creating a Monopoly. "You've got to use Paypal because we own it and if you don't, we're not going to let you sell on our website anymore". A variation of the eight year old who takes his ball and goes home because the other kids don't want to play his way. Vegas Vic
I just noticed that one of the most dishonest sellers on Eba is no longer a registered user. cwolff9833byl either quit or has been thrown off eBay. I had bought only one coin from her, with a MO (only option), and it was switched with a poor substitute coin. I Neged her and she neged me. ( That sounds like a song title!!!) She only took Money Orders, never PayPal or Credit Cards. Her merchandise was always overgraded if not switched. Personally, I drastically slowed down any purchases from ebay and always use a credit card when I do buy, and never had a problem as a buyer, with PayPal. The changes will make all transactions safer and will promote a bit more honesty in the seller if they know their funds will be frozen if they screwed up. On the other hand I hate the 12% FVF. What can a small time buyer/seller do? Sell good stuff honestly and hope to buy accordingly. Bruce
