I had an interest at an early age. Mostly a wide range of coins given to me by alot of different people. Interest never developed until recently. The combination of History, Online resources, An active US mint product schedule, precious metals inflation hedge, wide market easily available(EBAY, Local & Online DEALERS), NUMBERS/FACTS/- very similair to baseball stats(Mintage, sales, grading census, pricing/ really a numbers hobby). And of course the art form of the coins.
Before I was born, my mom collected wheaties. My dad collected proof sets and commemoratives. I got some wheats and a Whitman book from them and thats how i started. Now that I 'm a more serious collector, I been explaining to my mom that her collection is pretty weak. She strictly collects Two dollar bills, common kennedys, common Ikes, bicentennial "drummer boy" quarters and circulated state quarters.:mouth:
Oh yes, metal detecting too. My dad had a metal detector and often brought me too a baseball field near his childhood home. We frequently found kennedys and wheats. Also, at an old church right next door we had found countless 19th century cents.
A bit of back history on where I got my start: In the 40's my great uncle was an avid collector but got into some financial trouble when his business failed. His brother (my grandfather) bailed him out, and as collateral on a loan my grandfather never wanted paid back, he gave him his coin collection. He never would take it back until he paid off his debt, which never happened before his death. My grandparents, because they now had a fairly large collection, actually got interested in collecting coins, and added to it over the years. Then, when I was about 9 or 10 they gave me a complete set of silver Roosevelt dimes and an almost complete set of Lincolns for Christmas. That's when I got hooked. They gave me a little bit of the collection every year until eventually I had aquired almost all of it, minus a few Morgans they gave to other grandkids along the way. So, there's a substantial portion of my collection that has a lot of sentimental value above any monetary value. Guy~
My mom and dad got me this 85-S morgan for christmas, I was so excited to own a big silver coin. A couple years later I was given my grandpa's and great grandpa's collections/hoards. That really got me going. :thumb:
my start I envy alot of you guys, my father had a work eithic ,save or collect nothing at all. When I was very young ,my cousin and I would play with a cigar box of silver dollars and 50cent peices. Granny told us that when our grandfather and her died we would get these coins. After they died the coins went missing. lost interest. then later in life, 30's I started traveling with the company I worked far. I traveled all over the world and started bringing there money back home. Then one day a letter came from the mint stating I could order coins from them. I did, but left that to collect baseball cards then hot wheels. Now I'm back but not strong just what I want and like.
I started my collection in 2002 when the European Monytary Union introduced the EURO in my country. It all started as a collection of the commemorative 2€ coins that where issued (in that time 5 or 6/year), but quickly the EMU's members got gready and started to issue those special coins more ferquent and at higher selling rates and made collecting them rather expensive. By luck i've found in 2007 a Silver Art Bar in my coin club and i was hooked to them. Eversince i stopped my 2-Eurocollection and started a Silver Art Bar collection (all mints) that is more afforable and there is way more diversity and beautiful designs in them. My mind is set, I'll stick with those nice 1 Oz pieces of silver from the 70's.
Lol, this was pretty much the same for me. I ended up working a job where I got a lot of coinage from tips. After a couple of months I ended up with around $200 in change laying around my room and decided to take it to the bank. However, I decided to go through it to see if there were any wheat cents then looked for more information on collectible coins in circulation which got me hooked on roll searching. After finding this site, it pretty much followed for me to start a regular collection beyond my roll searched stuff.
There was a pretty monthly coin bourse up the block from where I lived in Lombard, Illinois. It was held in an old church on Westmore. I must have been about 9 or so, and I walked in, ran into this whole unusual setting and admired the coins. I was an old hoarder/packrat/collector type, with collections of keys, rocks, baseball cards, etc., and coins were a natural.
I would say I've always had a mild interest. As a kid I always wanted to see my grandfather's coin collection. My great uncle would always give me an Ike or half dollar whenever I'd see him and I always I paid attention to dates whenever I'd wrap coins. But I never really took it beyond that before I got my first colored $5 in change. To me, that was the trigger that if I ever wanted to collect the old small face bills (which is something I thought I'd eventually do) before they completely dropped out of circulation then I'd have to jump on it (have been since Feb). Fell into the coin collecting from there.
I got into coin collecting when i became disabled and could not building muscle cars and streetrods as a past time .
