What sort of effect is this?

I don't think that this is actually an error, per se. However, the "pattern" seems repeated. It looks like die polish marks or die cracks splitting from the numbers. Is this caused from a worn die that cracked at the base of the numbers?

I don't think I've seen die marks like this in such a consistent, patterned manner.

    Thanks in advance!

Are you referring to the bottoms of the digits?

If so, those are die cracks. A Common effect
when Dies strike up to tens, or hundreds, of
thousands of coins at 65 to 85 tons of pressure
    per strike.

Yes I'm talking about the die cracks at the bottom of the digits. It's just that those die cracks have a repeat / pattern to them. I guess it's just coincidence and inevitable.

I see the pattern you mean. Don't try and read more into it than what it is. The dies used to make this coin were made in 1892, 126 years ago. The technology wasn't what we have today.
