This is a really nice group of coinage in a old scratched up holder which really takes away from the beauty of these coins, Trying to find something similar but no luck so far. Any suggestions? What would you do?
If You look at the shield nickel, I had to wedge a piece of plastic in there, it has a smaller diameter than the other nickels, it looks terrible!!! Driving me nuts!!!
Capital plastics makes nice holders for sets like this. Sometimes you even see custom ones but the basic holder would be for each row here. They have all types. I have a 1964 proof set and a 1914 set in them. If the flying eagle has original luster left it might be worth getting it graded. That's probably the most valuable of the group and you could always replace it for the set. Most coin shops carry capital holders.
The flying eagle and the IHC both have great original luster I'll take better pics when I decide what I'm going to do with them.
I'm not really seeing anything tying the coins together in this particular grouping. I'd be taking them out and putting them into individual holders. If you want to display them as a group, I imagine Capital makes "mint set" holders with three rows of the five denominations. These photos make it look like the Barber and Standing Liberty quarters are cleaned, possibly a couple of the others as well. But that IHC - wow! I'd have high hopes for the Barber dime, too.
Yep. Polish the plastic. A little elbow grease and headlight restorer….. Well, a lot of elbow grease…… As far as the shield nickel. If I wanted to salvage the holder, I would remove the nickel and put a small dot of silicone on each of those prongs. Give it 3-4 days to cure out and that should tighten up the space between those prongs.
Are there varieties of silicone that don't give off acid as they cure? I'm just remembering the overpowering vinegar smell the last time I used high-temp silicone on a water heater vent...
Not necessarily. A little Googling tells me that there's something called neutral-cure silicone. I'll have to look into that -- I can think of a few uses for it around here!
I will have to agree with you. They are going to be separated.like you said the grouping is not right but that’s how i purchased the set.I was in PA visiting some friends when I stumbled across this set, I was on the hunt for the Flying Eagle oh well for $650 i couldn’t let it go!!! Yes that IHC is gorgeous!! I will take some pictures with my crappy phone tomorrow when I remove them.
Capital Plastics model 22 holds 3 type sets sort of like the one you have. You could probably special order one without the printed text if you really wanted to. Or, as you say, just break them out
as is said "buy the coin, not the case", I don't know what the price on those coins are but several look really nice. I'd buy them. you can always re-case them. The Flying Eagle and IHC sold me.
I don't see anything of astounding value and the kitschy holder is part of the appeal. So it depends on why you bought it and what you intend to do with it.
Well here is a couple of pics with my crappy phone! Hats off to you guys who take those amazing pictures because it is not easy to get that in hand look.
What a beautiful quasi eclectic set. I really like the better grade specimens the builder of that set used. The FEC and IHC are obviously the winners. The 1909 Lincoln is a VDB as well. Nice choice of coin. I think you hit a homerun at $650. I think the FEC alone comes in above that price point. Looks like an MS63-MS64. Edit: I'll revise my grade to AU58-MS60. Just noticed a bit of rear tail feather and talon wear.
Yes the Shield nickels were slightly smaller in diameter than the later nickels, If I remember correctly 20.5 mm compared to 21.1 mm, I'm not seeing wear there, that weakness is from strike.
