There is a bit more to the story as to why I collect early counterfeits - I had an ancestor that was a "midnight minter".
Sure, in my opinion, it's a crap coin. Nobody wanted the stupid things when they were current, and for good reason. Millions of them sat rotting in decomposing canvas bags for 70, 80, or more years in Treasury vaults until the Nixon administration. I consider the recent years "rediscovery" of Morgans one of the most screwy cockeyed things I've ever seen. When my dad had a store in the late 50's and early 60's, whenever one showed up in the cash drawer because some spinster spent it, we couldn't wait to get it to the bank and swap it for paper. No one would accept them in change, just like SBA's and Sacs today.
But that would be divulging the who, the where, the why, and the how. But I do have all the supporting documentation from newspaper clippings and family history to verify it.
He's long gone and his techniques are ancient. I don't see a problem with it but it's your story to tell.. or not
Well then, I wish you would put all your documentation in a sealed envelope (to be delivered to the ANA at your death) and keep it with your will. Just saying. If your relative was that "illustrious" his work is probably already known and your documents will enhance his activities and aid future research.
As a collector I am interested in all coins. I will look at just about everything the local shop has. I have just learned to limit my collection to a few specific items. One of these days I will start a type set - I think those are really good sets.
Artistic world bronze is becoming a hot segment, if the frequency of ribbons, medals, and talks at major shows is any indication.
I'm not really into coins that I paid too much for. It gets me into a bad mood whenever I revalue them lower.
I know the feeling; however, I usually only bought quality when I was spending any large (figure is relative for each of us) amount. You know what I realized. Every coin that I paid too much for, that made me "sick" and regretful turned out to be the coin everyone wanted and turned into a great purchase that I was glad I bought!
