Well like most of you it's for multiple reasons: 1- Because of the incredible history. 2- Because of the art work. 3- Because of the power of the idea of the monetary system. 4- Because of the feeling it gives me when I hold a coin and think of what it bought and what it's been trough.
Well I just bought a ton of britain pennies and half pennies...worht saving up for! I won a lot of coins! take a look http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190294559799 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190296087761 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190295723279 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190294635761 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190294635672 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190294635629 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190294635608
Treasure and original surfaces, plus 1. Treasure and original surfaces. The treasure being doublED dies, RPM's, OMM's, all die varieties. 2. Original detail and beautiful surface conditions, esp. copper. 3. Knowledge esp. about die and coin production. 4. History esp. about the conditions of the country and the mint during hard/good times. 5. Beauty of design of coins and paper. 5. Reason for rarity reasons for value, ie: the stories. 6. Learning of those that went before us and wondering what it will be like after were gone. 7. Learning just how "new" a country we really are and how fragile we have been at times and still persevered. Really, what have we had 12 or 14 only chief engravers in since 1792 - (my family came to Tennessee about 10 miles from where I sit in 1793). 8. The books and literature, catalogs etc. (I get about as much enjoyment from cracking open a new Coin World or auction catalog as I do looking at a new coin). 9. Meeting new and at times very interesting and colorful people. 10. Sharing all this with a young person or new person to our hobby. Not necessarily in that order - the order changes from time to time as I am sure you'll understand.
History is definitely a big part of it. Like other posters, I enjoy holding a coin from a long ago era and wondering what life was like then, and who handled the coin during the time it was used as money. I also appreciate the artwork, and the beauty of the metal. And I like to examine coins that I have today that I could only dream about owning when my grandmother gave me my first introduction to coins in the form of a Mercury dime and an old "Blue Book"-type buying list from Stack's.
I'm different. I never even gave it a thought as to why I collect coins. I don't think of the history angle, not the artistic side either. I would say it's just because I am a collector of stuff and things. I do like to look up information on coins, the history part is interesting at times but nothig I look forward to either. The only things I really like looking up is the materials used in making coins, the methods of making them, how errors occur and items like that but never thought of it as any historic information. And as to the artistic works on our coins. To me there is not much there on any of the modern coins. Presidents faces to me is just not artistic.
Yeah...I'll go on the Ancients, and talk about US. Go to bullion, and talk about circulating issues! I ROCK! lol hahaha hahahaha
