I'm still waiting for my new glasses. Please tell me what is wrong with each of these coins. Yes, I won them at auction, but in-hand, I'm not liking them at all. They all appear to be harshly cleaned. Opinions? 1. 1925 S California Jubilee 2. 1923 S Monroe Doctrine 3. 1936 S California Bay Bridge
Yeah... Scrubbed with something. And it may very well have been a wire brush. I just have a hard time believing anyone would take a wire brush to a coin.
Not horrible, if you got them cheaply enough, you could keep them...pocket pieces till they wear a bit.
Thats some harsh cleaning! I use MS70 coin cleaner and a Q-tip, and never even see any hairline scratches! But dont worry, I know not to clean coins that might loose value from it. (I have to say that or a dozen people will be screaming at me to not clean coins.)
MS70 isn't like acetone though. It actually says not to dip. I have to use a Q-tip to actually get it out. But I don't do it to coins that might loose too much value from it.
The scratches were just too bad on all three, so I returned them for a refund. Mike, at vette1986, was kind enough to apologize that those three slipped by his listing room and weren't labeled as "cleaned." All's well that ends well. Thanks for the input from all members.
For the new commers, look for the fine scratch lines on the surfaces and devices. The most obvious examples are on the bear on the last coin, the Bay Bridge commemorative half dollar.
Spitballing, but since MS70 is sodium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide will actually dissolve cotton, doesn't this spread stuff on your coin?
