This coin has great luster on both sides, but something does not look right mostly on the obverse. Does anyone have a clue what happened here. The picture does not show it well, but the rim is extremely weak from about 1:00 to 3:00.
My guess would be slight vertical misalignment of the die. http://www.maddieclashes.com/vertical-misaligned-die-error-tilted-die-error/
Not what I am talking about. I suspect that coin has been treated with something to make it redder. I had a 1916 that looked similar and PCGS said it had altered color.
Looks like the tone was altered but not by a whole much just a bit maybe. I see some tiny swirl marks indicating someone rubbing something in circles. Nice coin nonetheless.
The main thing is the grader. Numistrust Corporation!!! I believe they fall into the SSS category (Shameless Self Slabber).
I don't see anything wrong with that coin. I don't do a whole lot with copper, so I cannot comment on the color - but the rim looks just fine.
I see what you're asking, the fields are a bit odd. I've seen quite a few cents like this. My theory is that the obverse die was very slightly, evenly coated with a hard grease. Does the obverse luster cartwheel?
All I'm seeing is die state and I don't know of anything that would brighten copper like that. If there is anything, it ought to be bottled. The luster is explained by the die state, late states will impart that.
