Maybe that debris got on and adhered to the planchet when the planchet was punched. Maybe it got there some other way. However it got there, it got there. Now, imagine that die striking that planchet. The first thing it&#039;s going to strike is that debris raised off the surface of the planchet. The die is also going to tilt ever so slightly away from that area when it hits it. That&#039;s why the strongest strike on the reverse of the planchet proper is in that area of the planchet opposite to the metal, i.e., at the bottom of the planchet. The remainder of the planchet couldn&#039;t take the full impact of the strike for the raised debris, that&#039;s why the remainder of the planchet is weakly-struck. Now, turn to the obverse. That&#039;s, understandably, weakly-struck, too, for the same reason the reverse is weakly-struck, i.e., the foul-up in the p.s.i. for the raised metal on the planchet.
