If you younger collectors were really sophisticated and knew the approximate value of a coin and you purchased it from someone who knows nothing about the value for a very small amount that would be wrong. In your case I don't think you were too sure about the value, otherwise you wouldn't be here asking about it. There is nothing wrong with making a great deal or getting a bargain. The wrong part is if you know something is worth $100 and you know the person doesn't know what they have then you should at least tell them you'll pay more than they are asking because you feel it is worth more. That being said, most adults would grab it and run. It happens all the time and many antique and coin dealers take huge advantage of people who don't know what they have. Perhaps the lesson here is to use your head and try to find out what it is you have before putting it out on the tag sale table. Some stuff that might look like junk may be very valuable. I collect art deco bookends and each pair is worth anywhere from $100 to $500. If you don't know anything about them you might put them in a tag sale for $5. If you had taken a little time and did a google search you would know you had something much more valuable. Coins are extremely easy to search so there isn't much excuse on the sellers part for this kind of bargain basement pricing.
