What is the depression on this coin called?

    This soft, light brown, crud is the usual stuff making up strike thru's found on modern gold.

    Well, that one looks like someone was scratching at the surface of the coin pretty hard. Wonder if the struck-through foreign material was still there, and somebody thought "I'm gonna clean that off"?
