This is the Walhain-drawn note who&#039;s vignette was used in several banknotes. In this case by the Banque d&#039;Indochine. Early in WWII, the Italians had taken over French Somalia, and it had been realigned with the Vichy French (Axis). When the British were re-taking much of North Africa, French Somalia was re-taken by the British and Free French. The Banque d&#039;Indochine overprinted all circulating notes at that time, to make sure it was clear that it was aligned with the French. This particular note I have never seen in shape even close to this one (Unc), and is something I&#039;m very happy to have found. Originally printed in 1918 right after WWI, it was not released until September 1938 and only for that one month. I consider it one of the most beautiful banknotes ever issued.
