Too bad none of the other attempts at competing with NGC and PCGS weren't successful, though ICG was close for a while. Boy, were their grading standards tough, and unpredictable. But "toughness" doesn't equate to popularity. And this NGC and PCGS know very well. NGC does have good customer service, top to bottom. It must have something to do with sunny Florida. I doubt they were as happy when they were in Parsippany. When you call in, say high to Sarah for me. I wonder if she works 900 lines at night...she has that kind of "bedroom" voice.
Ditto. PCGS recently banned me from their forums because I called them out for some of the horrendous, inexcusable grading they've been doing (with pictures to demonstrate it). I'm talking about cleaned and not rinsed, splotchy, ugly, and scratched up coins with VF25-30 details that should have been bodybagged but instead reside in XF40 or better PCGS plastic. Quite frankly, they ought to be EMBARRASSED by their amateurish assessments, but instead they'd rather delete my posts and ban me instead of answering for their apparent ineptitude or favortism shown. But as others have noted, there are multitudes of Kool Aid drinkers out there who pay a premium for coins entombed in PCGS holders, thinking the coin is somehow "better" simply because PCGS gave an opinion about it.
Each Company has merits and inadequacies . All in all , if a mistake has been made , I know both companies take due diligence measures to correct their mistakes. Ultimately it is the collector who decides to buy a particular coin, but even given that , all TPG's have a written guarantee in which they provide great effort to satisfy their customers, when possible and appropriately. But of course, there are always those few who will never be satisfied .
Thanks for the correction, Chris. I had forgotten NGC joined the + game too. FWIW, I also agree that NGC's customer service is superior to PCGS. Grading and value in marketplace, not so much, IMO.
I agree with you. Saw an 1889-CC Morgan in a PCGS slab graded EF-45... Should have been in a body bag for being cleaned/dipped. It was pug-fugly.
The isolated examples dont mean much as every TPG makes mistakes. I have seen some hideous early dollars in NGC slabs that look like that got hit by brillo pads. Look at what the market says. What holder brings better $$ and has the better reputation? On another note NGC really struggles on their VAM attribution and they will not guarantee them.
Yeah... no. As I have been going after the key Morgans these past few months, the number of "isolated examples" cannot be ignored. There are some hiddeous key date coins in PCGS slabs. If it looks like it has "tone" in a picture on the internet, I have been passing. If I have seen the coin in person and it is real tone, I will buy it.
Anyone who wants proof, check out this coin posted on the NGC forum. 1944-D Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67+*
PCGS, without question, if you care about resale value. Another difference is that NGC is looser with very high grades for most series. Pop reports bear this out. Lance.
Pop reports don't mean squat unless you can examine every coin to see if it is accurately graded. PCGS is equally as bad at overgrading some coins. You're shooting blanks when you make carte blanche statements like that. Chris
Sorry you don't like to hear that, Chris. And I'm not saying PCGS doesn't sometimes overgrade. I'm just saying that NGC is known for loftier grades at the high end. Lance.
With respect to Walkers, I think Lance has it about right. May not be as true for some other series. As for the OP, it's hard to know which service to recommend without more information about the actual Walkers in question. Both PCGS and NGC have their positives and negatives.
CDN COIN MARKET INDICATOR PCGS: 78.75% NGC: 78.85% ANACS: 56.18% ICG: 64.50% PCI: 49.50% As you can see PCGS and NGC are virtually rated the same. Therefore to me it comes down to customer service and ease of use. The folks at NGC bend over backwards to satisfy their customers. I can't say that about PCGS. SEGS: 46.57% NCI: 40.92% INS: 31.14%
