.................... I don't shop high end auctions or CNG and the like. I have seen nice Tribute Pennies on VC at around $400, they may not be "fine style' or something that you gravitate towards, but they have been out there. And that is why I noted they get zapped up quick. Even the lesser/off centers/porous ones for $120 or so & I find those to be a bargain.
See Mat, the problem with me, that i don't buy coins with porosity or poor portrait details, so $120 will not work. I need sharp portrait, reverse and no pitting, no roughness and no scratches
I would prefer the middle one myself. Were the first one not missing most of TI CAESAR, it would be my hands-down favorite.
$400-600 for something with a lot of eye-appeal. I can't remember what I paid for this--it was my first ancient coin ever and it was about 30 years ago:
I......I......I......would....probably give in. Yes! Seriously, Svarog–yes I would pay $500 for a good quality Tiberius "Tribute Penny." That's just me though. I've paid $500 for Judaean coins that are considered ugly by many.
I would have to search around to find the prices but I know that 1 was the least expensive and 3 was the most. I would probably say that the first example is my favorite. The pitting isn't nearly so obvious in hand and the reverse is wonderful. I think these do highlight how just assigning a grade means very little in overall appeal.
We all have our own favorites when it comes to style. This is one of a group (20???) found in India a few decades ago. All were from the same die set. I found interest in the fact they were good silver and well made. The best part is the legend was well copied from a coin off center losing the first part of the obverse so they did not know what to put there. The theory is that the people who made them valued the coins of Tiberius for their good metal and disliked the later Romans (Nero) for debasement so they made their own 'good' money. There is little demand for these but less supply since one seems to come on the market only every few years or so. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=245275 https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=97079
