Not only that, but the coin has to actually circulate to get the look, because wear on the high points rubs off that sulfide/oxide layer, causing the contrast.

It actually has to go through a more complex process than that. It must circulate, be put aside for a while (years) where it can tarnish, then repeat that process maybe a few times, to get that look. Straight circulation doesn't result in much contrast since it wears all surfaces. Folks with pocket pieces can confirm this.

I found one I love. It's in the mail now. Nothing too fancy.

Just bought this one at my local coin club meeting.
    A vintage counterfeit "circ-cam" from hand-cut dies.
Tested as silver plate over "German Silver" (63% copper, 21% zinc, 15% nickel).
I find it somewhat ironic that it actually looks better than most genuine circulated 3-cent silver pieces.

I've got plenty of classic silver with the look, but it's rarer in clad coins. Here's one I got in change from a U-Scan just a day or two ago:

I trust that it is not to late to pile-on this thread with a World coin photo. This one is Notgeld.

20170203_164554.jpg 20170203_164627.jpg The tones aren't as pronounced as many of the others posted, but this is one of my favorite Morgan's to look at. I really like the way "liberty" and the hair stand out in the obverse. And on the back the eagles eye and face really pop.

Let's bump this thread back up into the daylight, shall we?

That very fondly reminds me of my first Shield nickel I got when I was a kid: an 1866 with that identical look. I bought it for $5 in the summer of 1977.

    Love it.

Stadt Duren kriegsgeld, yes? I found one of those in the last big bag of tokens I bought. It was a nice bag of tokens. One of those "Geez, I can't possibly lose on this at the price" kinda deals.

My Dad was born in 1901. His Dad gave him this Morgan Dollar because of his birthdate, my Dad gave it to me and at some point it will go to my son.

Been putting a few classic commemoratives together for a while now with this look. I'll have to get some images soon. I love the depth you can get.
