Counter stamped. Someone knocked their own date into it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say PMD on this one?

I couldn't agree more. There are threads here dedicated to stuff like that.

Counterstamped. In May of 2012, I'm gonna guess.

    But why? There's the question.

    Interesting.

Totally correct. Counterstamped coins are definitely post mint damage.

But not necessarily bad damage, like plain old damage damage. Give me an interesting counterstamp over a scratch or corrosion any day.

As a matter of fact, on some colonial coins, a certain counterstamp can increase the value- sometimes dramatically. (Unfortunately this does not apply to 1994-D Lincoln cents with 2015 counterstamps.)

Don't you remember the Great Coin Revaluation of 2012 when cent coins became five cent coins?

I counterstamped and marked a bunch of cents and cruddy halves a few years ago. Just to see if I would ever get them back in my searches. Still haven't seen one back yet in 5 years of searching.
If anyone finds a coin with "FF" on it....you know where it came from :)
Maybe someone in 50 years will get one and ask it on CT of the future :)

"What goes around comes around." Some people do it just to see if it ever comes back to them or someone they know, go figure!

Exactly what I thought as well.

The clue may be found in here:

I'm hoping it has to do with Grumpy Cat.

It’s definitely damaged but it’s called a counter stamp. For some reason someone wanted to remember May 2012, maybe a birth or something like that.

Maybe it's someone who knows "Bill" and 2012 marked his fifth year being sober.

Lordmarcovan, someone got it wrong...the giveaway is 5 2021...Not 5 2012...even p98 was deceived by this one....!

Only the person that counterstamped them knows for sure.

Not all counterstamped coins are post mint damage. 1,389 1848 CAL. quarter eagles were stamped while the coin was still in the die since there is no obverse deformation so not all counterstamped coins are PMD. Since the coin didn't leave the die, it couldn't be post mint damage. Just an interesting observation.

From the looks of the reverse, it may have been sitting face up on the cement when it was punched with the 5,
