I liked the post about collecting baseball cards, it reminds me of that old saying, "if only I knew then what I know now".
I started with a Lladro in 1995-it was to be my first in a collection. It was a wedding gift from the then new husband. The Lladro broke, and then shortly after the marriage did too. Nice statues of porceline, but bad memories (sorry). On to better memories. I collect fabric - I design quilt tops. I collect antique tools - hand tools are a favorite. I also collect a few 1940-1960 figurines made of that poured chalky stuff. I like firearms - anything from Sturm and Ruger, and Henry Rifles (I have 3 & 2 of my own, and my husband has many more - he shares). I also have a small collection Masonic and Eastern Star crafts.
They even have a modern reprint of Mantle's Rookie Card out now called " The Card Your Mother Threw Out" ( I have that one too )
Wow... In addition to al my guitars, occupied japan, gems, etc. I just received a very large box from my dear old sainted mother. The box is full of old japanese dolls that were made by some master doll maker. Just as soon as I get home (and have my neighbor lift the box for me), I'll try and take some pictures and name names and dates. Almost every one of them appear to have been made with very high quality Kimono material. Some of them are obviously very old, and some e ven have "western" features..(Meaning that they look occidental). There is also a very large samurai with swords and staff..very cool stuff. Oddly enough, my mom has been a Buddhist Preist for more than 25 years and has traveled extensively while performing her duties with the Buddhist Churches of America. Now SHE has a few outstanding collections.. As soon as I get photos and b ackground, I'll definately post it up.
When I was a child I collected beer cans, bottle caps, keychains, stones, coins, postcards. Now I'm trying to stay only with coins and antiques... but is really hard to quit my other collecting habits. BTW, I see kids today don't collect anything... I asked my nephews if they want to inherit my beer can collection. None of them wanted it...
Same here on the sports cards. I collect anything that catches my fancy. Coins, Megalodon and other prehistoric shark teeth, vintage pictures, antique trunks and old and new currency. Thinkin about buying a metal detector.
I collect ... HUsbands ... just kidding, I only have had two, but I wouldn't be surprised if the collection grows! LOL!:goofer: I used to collect Longaberger baskets (over 150 of them) - still have them but don't buy anymore. I also collect Native American pottery, and american pottery (like old crocks, Hull, etc). And when I moved to Maryland, I started a blue crab themed collection - so I have blue crab decorative items in my house (prints, pottery, figurines). Mostly my collecting focus now is on coins.
Wow - what a can of worms - don't let my wife see this list: Guns, Ammo amd Militaria Coins - US and world - Currency Stamps PocketKnives Antique tools Antique fishing eqipment Pocket watches Cigarette lighters Beer cans and bottles ONLY from Brazil (Long story, but I have 51 uniques!!) Boy Scout patches including OA patches Did I mention wives and kids? Need I go on? Those items are collections, then I also have a ton of "stuff". I am a pack rat, and now that my Dad recently passed, my Mom wants me to take his stuff. He never threw anything out - ever see that show American Pickers? ROFL
My son is going to continue mine...to my wife's chagrin! Most kids in my High School classes don't see the point of collecting anything if they're not going to "get something for it" when they're done! (as if there's some organization that's going to reward you for all 50 state quarters!) I see this as evidence of the most successful lesson we've passed on to the next generation. That everything (Math, Science, English, Art) is only valuable to learn so that you can pass the class, only so you can get a diploma, only so you can get a good job. If you can buy big ticket items w/o any of it, then there's really no reason for all of it.
