Agreed. The lobe would be almost half the size it should be if you take away the "doubled" portion. If not a hit, maybe some radical MD/die bounce.
I don't see what it could be a clash of. It looks exactly like hundreds of hits to the ear that I have seen.
Heres Mr. Potter intake on this coin It looks like a doubled die but I can't be sure. Can you get even better images? Nice coin of a DD! I'll wait for an in-hand assessment. As it is, my opinion of it not being a DDO is unchanged. The fact that removing the doubling makes the ear smaller is evidence enough in my books.
The new photos don't change my opinion. It looks the same to me. I'm well aware that Potter is incredibly knowledgable and much more so than I. That doesn't mean I have to agree with him, and likewise, with all due respect, it doesn't mean that he is correct 100% of the time. If it does turn out to be a DDO, I will wholeheartedly admit my mistaken attribution.
Are you able to do an overlay? Let's just say that as "pudding", it could/should put any doubts to rest.
I can't dispute Potter, but I don't think it's a doubled die either. If so, the rule of devices being enlarged has to change.
You have a very good anwser in your first post . I do think it has something to do with the die or some crazy thing like that . Not sure what variety expert choose whats good or bad . But I would think everyone wants new DDOs or DDRs ... Thats up to the experts not the coin collectors ....
I think Ken and I are going to me somewhere shortly . I know he wants to give my canadian 1943 fifty cent piece a (vcr ) number on it ...
Do you search with a loupe first, Rick? Or do you search with the LED scope? If the scope, could it just be a stain & glare. The LED scope play nice "light tricks".
